These Expressions Are a 'Breath of Fresh Air'

Has anyone ever said that you or your ideas were a "breath of fresh air?" If so, you should feel good about it. If something is a "breath of fresh air" that means it's new, different, and exciting or just makes things feel better or more fun.
So if you didn't like school, but then got a new teacher who was lots of fun, you could say "Mr. Rodgers is a breath of fresh air — I love his classes!"
If something disappears "into thin air," it has completely and suddenly disappeared and left nothing behind. And if something comes "out of thin air" it arrives without warning.
So if Mr. Rodgers suddenly stopped coming to school one day, and you asked another teacher what happened, they might say, "I don't know, he just disappeared into thin air." Or they might also answer, "His leaving really came out of thin air."
If you want to explain something that has made people angry, confused, or upset, you can say you are "clearing the air." This expression, which has been used since the 1300s, comes from the way the sun and wind can make the sky clear after a storm.
So if lots of people were worried about what happened to Mr. Rodgers, another teacher might say, "Let me clear the air about Mr. Rodgers. He's fine, he just had to go and help his mother because she is sick."7

There are varieties of Idioms you may add to your daily English conversation such as Breath of fresh air, Out of thin air, Into thin air and Clearing the air.

The Miser And His Gold

An old miser lived in a house with a garden.
The miser hid his gold coins in a pit under some stones in the garden.
Every day, before going to bed, the miser went to the stones where he hid the gold and counted the coins. He continued this routine every day, but not once did he spend the gold he saved.

One day, a thief who knew the old miser’s routine, waited for the old man to go back into his house. After it was dark, the thief went to the hiding place and took the gold. The next day, the old miser found that his treasure was missing and started crying loudly.

His neighbor heard the miser’s cries and inquired about what happened. On learning what happened, the neighbor asked, “Why didn’t you save the money inside the house? It would’ve been easier to access the money when you had to buy something!”
“Buy?”, said the miser. “I never used the gold to buy anything. I was never going to spend it.”

On hearing this, the neighbor threw a stone into the pit and said, “If that is the case, save the stone. It is as worthless as the gold you have lost”.

Bolton says Trump could me...

Bolton says Trump could meet Kim to win reelection
US President Donald Trump could push to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for the third time in October to bolster his November reelection, said former national security adviser John Bolton.

“If the president felt he was in deep, deep trouble, another meeting with his friend Kim Jong-un might look like something that could turn things upside down again,” Bolton told a video press conference hosted by New York foreign journalists Thursday.

But he was doubtful whether the North would respond to Trump’s “October surprise,” judging from the regime’s blowing up of an inter-Korean liaison office weeks ago, in what was a culmination of Kim’s discontent with Seoul and Washington over delays in highly-sought sanctions relief from stalled nuclear talks.

Bolton’s remarks stood in sharp contrast to US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun, who days earlier called another Trump-Kim summit “probably unlikely.”

Experts were also skeptical.

Joseph Yun, former US special representative for North Korea policy, said Trump was facing more pressing domestic challenges – a COVID-19-induced recession and racial divisions – to cram the North Korea issue into his agenda.

Robert Gallucci, a former US chief negotiator with North Korea over its nuclear program, said Pyongyang would not seek to engage with Trump, who might be “disappearing in five months.”

South Korean President Moon Jae-in this week floated the idea of a potential Donald Trump-Kim Jong-un meeting, with his office saying it had conveyed Moon’s views to Washington, and that officials there were making efforts to open the talks.

Shin Jong-woo, a senior analyst at the Korea Defense and Security Forum, said Moon’s remarks were an expression of what should be done, as opposed to what could be done.
“His office knows better,” he said.

Reservations Required Before Visits

Making reservations to spend time at beaches in South Korea may become mandatory as the country tries to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The country is planning to first introduce a reservation system for visits to 14 beaches in South Jeolla Province before expanding the scheme nationwide, according to the ocean ministry. The beaches will open between July 10 and Aug. 30.

People who plan to visit those beaches need to make reservations online, providing their names and contact information, the ocean ministry said.

But not all municipal governments welcomed the idea, saying they will come up with their own virus preventive measures, citing cost and environmental reasons.

In addition to the reservation system, the ministry also plans to install signal lamps on major beaches that show how crowded a place is.

With the country still dealing with cluster infections in the capital area, other regions where the virus situation has relatively stabilized recently decided to reopen public facilities, including museums and state forests, but with a reservation system.

The municipal government of the southern resort island of Jeju, one of South Korea's most popular tourist destinations, reopened 35 public facilities, including seven cultural centers and four museums, on Thursday on a conditional basis, with a visitor reservation system in place.

South Korean switched to a loosened social distancing scheme on May 6, allowing citizens to return to their normal lives under the condition that they follow quarantine guidelines.

Solar Powered Floating House for Rent in Australia

하기음성 파일 듣고 아래 내용으로 같이 스터디 해주세요!

If you enjoy ocean views, then Australia's Lilypad Floating Villa might be the perfect house for you. Designed by Australian architect Chuck Anderson, it floats in the ocean off the coast of Palm Beach, about an hour's drive north of Sydney, Australia.

The one bedroom, one-bathroom house gets its electricity from solar panels, and is available to rent starting at about $1,200 a night on Airbnb. Special package deals include meals made by a chef, a selection of wines from the house's wine cellar, and access to a boat for exploring the area's private beaches.

For those not wanting to drive a boat themselves, a boat with a driver can pick you up and drop you off at the local wharf. A private concierge is available 24/7 to help with things like planning activities or booking restaurants, and you can even ask them to organize an onboard massage.

Those who love the water can take a ladder down to swim in the sea, which is about 21 degrees Celsius in the summer and about 17 C in winter. There are also paddle boards and fishing equipment onboard — and if that doesn't keep you entertained, the house has Wi-Fi and Netflix as well!

The local area offers walking trails, picnic spots, and a variety of restaurants and cafes. You can also visit the Summer Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, made famous by the Australian TV show Home and Away, or see the historic Barrenjoey Lighthouse, built in 1881.

Summary: If you want to get away and be ecological during your rest or holiday there is a solar-powered floating house in Australia. Apart from being nature friendly, it is also close to nature that it’ll make your stay worth every penny spent.

The Tortoise And The Bird

A tortoise was resting under a tree, on which a bird had built its nest. The tortoise spoke to the bird mockingly, “What a shabby home you have! It is made of broken twigs, it has no roof, and looks crude. What’s worse is that you had to build it yourself. I think my house, which is my shell, is much better than your pathetic nest”.

“Yes, it is made of broken sticks, looks shabby and is open to the elements of nature. It is crude, but I built it, and I like it.”

“I guess it’s just like any other nest, but not better than mine”, said the tortoise. “You must be jealous of my shell, though.”

“On the contrary”, the bird replied. “My home has space for my family and friends; your shell cannot accommodate anyone other than you. Maybe you have a better house. But I have a better home”, said the bird happily.

Moral: Better a crowded hut than a lonely mansion.

Summary: The tortoise belittles the shelter of the bird. However, the bird reacted to the tortoise’s statement wisely by letting it know that her nest is so much better for it is a home filled with love compared with its small shell.

There’s a hero, if you look inside your heart,
You don’t have to be afraid of what you are.
There’s an answer if you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know will melt away.

And then a hero comes along with the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside and you know you can survive
So, when you feel like hope is gone

Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth that a hero lies in you.

It’s a long road when you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand for you to hold
You can find love if you search within yourself
And that emptiness you felt will disappear.

Hold on, there will be tomorrow.

Female teachers fear their school photos ..

Female teachers fear their school photos used against them

Seven out of 10 school teachers fear that their pictures printed in graduation albums could be used for crimes against them.
From elementary to high schools, photo albums are made every year as a gift for graduating students, including pictures of teachers and other school staff members, and it is a long school tradition.

In a survey conducted by a teachers' union in Seoul on 8,122 teachers across the country, 70.6 percent of respondents said they held such a concern. Female teachers were much more concerned than male colleagues and younger teachers were more worried than older teachers.
Among the respondents, 7.6 percent answered they witnessed their photos being circulated in Kakao group chats or on Naver forums for mothers.

"Of course, I am worried. It's not that I am too concerned to walk alone at night. But I am aware that I can be a victim of a crime because some people know my face and want to do something against me," said one female middle-school teacher in her 50s from Seoul
"I have a teacher friend in Gyeonggi Province. She has a school-age child and was invited to a group chat for parents. She told me that in that group chat she saw her colleague's picture being shared and other parents talking about the colleague's appearance. It happens more often than people imagine."
She said it's frustrating to learn that her information is made public without her approval. "I don't know anything about them, but they know and talk about me."

Asked about solutions, 51.6 percent of the teachers answered they'd like to see the graduation albums discontinued.
Another popular suggestion was to give teachers the freedom to be excluded from the albums.
"This makes sense. If a teacher doesn't want their picture to be printed in the graduation album, that opinion should be respected," the teacher said

Elephant And Friends

A lone elephant wandered the forest looking for friends.
She came across a monkey and asked, “Will you be my friend, monkey?” “You are too big and cannot swing on trees as I do. So I cannot be your friend”, said the monkey.
The elephant then came across a rabbit and asked him if she could be his friend. “You are too big to fit inside my burrow. You cannot be my friend”, replied the rabbit.
Then the elephant met a frog and asked if she could be her friend. The frog said “You are too big and heavy. You cannot jump like me. I am sorry, but you cannot be my friend”.

The elephant asked a fox, and he got the same reply, that she was too big. The next day, all the animals in the forest were running in fear. The elephant stopped a bear and asked what was happening and was told that a tiger has been attacking all the animals.

The elephant wanted to save the other weak animals and went to the tiger and said “Please sir, leave my friends alone. Do not eat them”. The tiger didn’t listen and asked the elephant to mind her own business. Seeing no other way to solve the problem, the elephant kicked the tiger and scared it away.

She then went back to the others and told them what happened. On hearing how the elephant saved their lives, the animals agreed in unison, “You are just the right size to be our friend.”

Friends come in all shapes and sizes!

Tiger tests positive for coronavirus

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, in the first known case of a human infecting an animal and making it sick, the zoo's chief veterinarian said on Sunday.
Nadia, the 4-year-old Malayan tiger that tested positive, was screened for the COVID-19 disease after developing a dry cough along with three other tigers and three lions, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement. All of the cats are expected to recover, it said.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is believed to have spread from animals to humans, and a handful of animals have tested positive in Hong Kong.
But officials believe this is a unique case because Nadia became sick after exposure to an asymptomatic zoo employee, Paul Calle, chief veterinarian at the Bronx Zoo, told Reuters. Calle said they did not know which employee infected the tiger.
"This is the first time that any of us know of anywhere in the world that a person infected the animal and the animal got sick," Calle said, adding that they planned to share the findings with other zoos and institutions. "Hopefully we will all have a better understanding as a result."

While the other tigers and lions were also exhibiting symptoms, the zoo decided to test only Nadia because she was the sickest and had started to lose her appetite, and they did not want to subject all the cats to anesthesia, Calle said.
"The tigers and lions weren't terribly sick," he said.

Nadia underwent X-rays, an ultrasound and blood tests to try to figure out what was ailing her. They decided to test for COVID-19 given the surge in cases in New York City, the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States.
The first tiger at the zoo, which has been shut since mid-March, began showing signs of illness on March 27, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratories, which performed the test. (Reuters)

Scientists develop reusable face mask filter

South Korean scientists have developed a face mask filter that retains its protective properties even after being washed over 20 times, a research university said Tuesday.

The development by a team led by Kim Il-doo at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) comes as the country struggles with a supply shortage of protective masks amid worries over the spread of the new coronavirus.

The new filter, which can be placed inside regular cotton masks, is made of a nanofabric that is specially aligned for maximum protective qualities even after prolonged use.
Existing disposable masks lose their ability to filter out particles with time, especially if they come into contact with moisture and if they are washed.
Even after the mask is washed dozens of times with soap or submerged in an ethanol solution for three hours, its protective properties are retained.

"After undergoing such a process, the filter retained its structure with its prospective properties remaining at 94 percent compared to when it was first used," KAIST said.
The new filter can be implemented in medium level KF80 masks as well as high grade N95 respirators that are in high demand by medical personnel. Even after the filtering material is folded and unfolded 4,000 times, the material retains KF80 grade protective qualities, it said.
KAIST said at present, Kim's team can churn out 1,500 filters a day at its lab, and if it gets approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, production capability could be ramped up. (Yonhap)

Kim Il-doo’s team developed a washable face mask filter which does not lose its protective properties after being folded and unfolded 4,000 times.

3 min class for pronunciation with Jezel teacher

Good day! It's me again, your teacher Jez from Dial-U.

In today's pronunciation class, we will read a short paragraph about:

Listen while I read this one.

Taxes are special fees charged by a government on the people who live in a country, state or city. These fees help pay for public services like police, road and bridge repair, and public schools. In the United States people have to pay national, state, and local taxes. Income tax is a tax applied to how much money a person earns in a year. There are both federal and state income taxes. These have to be paid every year by April 15th.

There are special forms the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the government agency in charge of collecting taxes, asks people to fill out. There are tax credits that people with low income, college students, and parents can get.

[Verse 1]
You are the sunlight that rose again in my life
A reincarnation of my childhood dreams
I don’t know what this emotion is
If this place is also inside a dream

[Verse 2]
This dream is a blue mirage in the desert
A priori deep inside of me
I’m so happy, I can’t breathe
My surroundings are getting more and more transparent

I hear the far-away ocean
Across the dream, over the horizon
I’m going to the place that’s getting clearer
Take my hands now
You are the cause of my euphoria

Take my hands now
You are the cause of my euphoria
Close the door now
When I’m with you I’m in utopia
[Verse 3]
Were you wandering around
Looking for an erased dream too?
It’s different from the typical definition of destiny
Your pained eyes are looking at the same place as me
Won't you please stay in dreams

Even if the desert becomes cracked
No matter who shakes this world
Don't let go of the hand you're holding
Please don’t wake up from this dream

Departure By Kim Dong Ryul

I wanna go to the farthest place
I wonder what kind of people I can meet over there
I wanna go to the highest point
I wonder the place I can see beyond
One small water bottle, a dusty camera,
A stained map being put into my bag
Over the hill and through the forest path
While I touch the ground with my light steps
I walk along the endless path slowly

I sit down without any thoughts as well as I take a break
Even though I am lost it is important that I don't rush
Someday I will figure it out
As this path teaches me eventually
The wet ground, the footprints in front of me
The sky I see for the first time, but the same old path
Over the hill and through the forest path
While I touch the ground with my light steps
I walk along the endless path slowly
My heart becomes excited from seeing a new scenery
I act extravagantly from seeing trivial
I walk while whistling
I walk along the path even though I trip over occasionally
One small water bottle, a dusty camera,
A stained map being put into my bag
Over the hill and through the forest path
While I touch the ground with my light steps
I walk along the endless path slowly
The road that I'm familiar since childhood
I sometimes do yearn for it
So I'm off for a journey, for the wider world
